A large proportion (33.8) of children attending the Child Psychiarty Clinic (UHWI) were separated during their early childhood from parents or parent-figure. Separated children tended to be emotionally labile and anti-social. The largest number of children attending the clinic for treatment were within the 8-15 year age group. It is suggested that these children at risk be helped by means of social and psychological intervention. (AU)

The various attempts by family theorists to standardize the norms governing the institution of the family have consistently failed. As we approach the 21st century the family concept remains as elusive as ever. The family is no longer a face to face group of people sheltering, nurturing and preparing the young for a measure of competence and a measure of participation in society. It is a far flung constantly evolving entity which is in continual adaptation to other social systems. The result of this process is a fluidity that is empirically unmanageable. This paper will try to depict the family conceptually in roles ranging from the procreational to the mundane equivalent of a transhipment port for goods and services. Occasionally the family is the source of a bad social virus. Social psychiatry as arbiter determines its influence on human development (AU)
